About this site

Written by a local, for real travelers

Osaka Kyoto Insider exists because the best local knowledge never makes it into guidebooks.

Who we are

We are a small team based in Osaka, Japan. We live here, eat here, and take the same trains as everyone else. Osaka Kyoto Insider started as a personal project to write down the things locals know — the restaurants without English menus, the temple entrances that skip the tourist crowds, the train hacks that save you 40 minutes.

We cover Osaka, Kyoto, and the day trips that connect them. Every guide is written from personal experience, not press trips or sponsored stays.

What makes this different

Most travel content about Japan is written by people who visited for two weeks. We live here. That means:

  • We know which "hidden gems" on Instagram are now overrun with tour groups
  • We know the seasonal changes — which spots are worth it in winter vs. spring
  • We know the practical stuff: how to navigate Osaka's underground malls, which convenience stores stock the good onigiri, when to avoid the crowds at Fushimi Inari

Our editorial approach

We don't rate places on a star system or write encyclopedic "top 50" lists. Instead, we write focused guides that answer a specific question: how do I actually enjoy this place like a local?

We are honest when something is overrated. We tell you when a famous spot isn't worth the two-hour queue. We give you the alternative that locals prefer.

Keeping this site going

This site is free to read. We keep it that way through a combination of display advertising (Google AdSense) and affiliate links on some posts. When you book a hotel or tour through a link on our site, we may earn a small commission. This never influences what we recommend — see our Affiliate Disclosure for full details.
